Where we work

Five regions

Not fifty. A region earns a place here when a planner has lived or worked in it, a fixer has been with us for three seasons, and we can get a party from any bed on the route to a departing aircraft inside a day. Most places fail the last test.

Since 2017

Aysén, Chile — from Coyhaique south to Villa O'Higgins

The Southern Andes

Ines spent four field seasons measuring the Exploradores glacier before she ever sold a journey. She knows which bridges wash out in January and which lodge keeps its generator serviced.

Planner
Ines Cadoret
Fixer
Camila Ruiz-Tagle, Coyhaique
Way out
Balmaceda airport inside 9 hours from anywhere on the route

What we leave outTorres del Paine. It is beautiful, and it is a queue. We would rather send you to someone who loves it.

Since 2018

Yamagata, Aomori, and the Shiretoko peninsula in Hokkaido

Northern Japan

Miru scouted locations in Tōhoku for NHK for eleven years, which means she has been snowed into most of its inns at least once and knows which ones cope well.

Planner
Miru Hasegawa
Fixer
Kenji Abe, Tsuruoka · Yuto Sasaki, Rausu
Way out
A domestic flight to Tokyo inside 6 hours, even in snow

What we leave outKyoto, Tokyo, or the cherry blossom. Winter in the north only, and only by train where a train exists.

Since 2019

Morocco's Anti-Atlas, from Taroudant to Sidi Ifni

The Atlantic Maghreb

Rafael walked the Ameln with Hicham for three winters before we ran a departure, and we pay the village association directly for every day we walk its paths.

Planner
Rafael Oduya
Fixer
Hicham Boukhriss, Tafraoute
Way out
Agadir airport inside 4 hours from every night on the route

What we leave outMarrakech, Fes, Chefchaouen, or a desert camp. The Anti-Atlas is its own place and deserves not to be a side trip.

Since 2016

Lofoten and Senja in Arctic Norway; the Faroe Islands

The North Atlantic

Our first journey, in 2016, went to Lofoten. We have been back every year since, and we moved three nights to Senja when Lofoten's roads started to need traffic lights.

Planner
Ines Cadoret
Fixer
Sigrid Norheim, Svolvær · Óli Joensen, Sørvágur
Way out
An airport inside 3 hours from every bed, weather permitting — and we plan as if it won't

What we leave outIceland. It is wonderful and extremely well served, and we have nothing to add to it.

Since 2018

Namibia's Skeleton Coast, the Hoanib and the Kunene river

The Namib Coast

Ndapewa counted rhino for a Kunene conservancy for twelve years. The families we visit know her, the trackers trust her, and the park wardens take her calls.

Planner
Rafael Oduya
Fixer
Ndapewa Shituula, Swakopmund
Way out
A charter aircraft within 2 hours of any camp, on permanent standby

What we leave outEtosha, Sossusvlei, or any self-drive. Other houses do those well; this coast needs two vehicles and a radio.

Asked, and declined

Where we won't go

We are asked to add a region roughly once a month. These are the ones we looked at seriously.

  • 2019

    Bhutan

We could not find a way to get a party out in under a day during the monsoon.

  • 2021

    Svalbard

Ice-cruise traffic grew faster than the settlement. We did not want to add to it.

  • 2022

    The Scottish Highlands

We live here. Our friends run it better, and we send them every enquiry.

  • Every year

    Antarctica

The ship does the planning, not us. We have nothing to add but a margin.

Know one of these already?

Tell us which. Returning travellers to a region go to the front of the list for its next departure.
